The Importance of Scent Control
As we encroach on the early deer season here in Ohio, we are all worried about scent control. The mornings are chilled, however, the highs for the days are in the mid 70’s to lower 80’s. We need every advantage that we can get. It can be a bit overwhelming with all of the different products flooding the market. 1 Peter 5:7 tells us; “Cast all your anxieties on Him, because He cares for you.”.
Scent control starts with the washing and care of your hunting clothing. There are many brands on the market of laundry detergents for hunting. Dead Down Wind, Scent-A-Way, Scent Killer, etc… All of which can be effective, but quite expensive. Most every brand has a line that kills UV light absorbed by your clothing. If you are one that doesn’t believe the hype of the UV killing detergent, then you may save some money by using a free and clear detergent. Most stores have their own line, which is even cheaper yet.

Traditional scent control sprays are definitely in our arsenal. As we get out of the vehicle, get dressed to head into the stand, we douse ourselves down with the stuff. Most hunters are far too reliant on just the sprays though. While I will say that they work to some degree, we are constantly shedding skin cells, sweating, breathing, etc… While we at Created Outdoors encourage you to use your favorite sprays, do not just rely on them.
Another product that seems to be gaining popularity are the ozone treatment systems, such as, Scent Crusher, and Ozonics. I warn you that the smell of the ozone may cause a headache, or make some nauseous. Using the bags or the portable closets may be the best option for those that suffer side effects from it. This way, you can treat clothing and allow them time to air out prior to wearing them. Using the tree units that shower you in ozone can be effective if you do not notice any effects from the other products. I know Scent Crusher has a vehicle unit available. This will fill the vehicle with ozone, again, there may be side effects from these products.
Perhaps the most important tool in the scent control arsenal is to play the wind. Nothing quite works like the old timer proven method of playing the wind. Have multiple stand set-ups, at least one for every wind direction. This will help maximize the number of sits that you can get throughout the season. Use wind indicators while in the stand. As we all know, the weather person on the local news is wrong more times than they are correct about their predictions.

Do cover scents work? It is our experience that they can be quite effective when used properly, and at the right time. The memory, as well as the smell of my dad soaking our boots in fox urine before heading into the stand will stay with me forever. Fox and raccoon urines can be used the entire season. Using apple, and other strong attractive cover scents can be helpful when the orchards are producing ripe apples. Just remember to check the local laws prior to using any attractants to make sure it is legal. Using doe and buck urine can also work. Make sure you use the correct urine at the correct time. Early season, probably just normal doe urine is good. Pre-rut and rut use doe estrous, and buck urine. You can also purchase these with scents from tarsal and orbital glands. Late season, normal doe urine and buck urine can work well.
We hope this gives some insight on the different types of scent control. Try out a few different options, and find what works best for you. We pray that you have a safe and successful season. Until next time, hunt hard, and pray harder.
